Women and Land

Securing Access to Land

In many communities across Malawi, women do the majority of farming but rarely have secure access to land of their own. Without land rights, women often struggle to grow food for their families or invest in agriculture as a source of income.

Through Women Together’s Women and Land program, women’s groups work together to secure access to farmland to grow crops, raise livestock, and build long-term economic stability.

For many women, this program represents their first opportunity to farm land independently and make decisions about how it is used.

Growing Skills and Harvets

Once land is secured, women receive training in sustainable agriculture, climate-smart farming, and cooperative business management.

Working together, the women cultivate crops, care for livestock, and learn techniques that improve soil health, increase yields, and protect their land for future generations.

Through cooperative farming, women share labor, knowledge, and resources—building both stronger harvests and stronger communities.

Strengthening Families and Communities

Access to land gives women the ability to grow food, earn income, and support their families.

The harvests from cooperative farms help provide food security while profits from agricultural sales allow women to pay school fees, invest in small businesses, and improve their homes.

As women gain experience and confidence, they also become leaders within their communities, sharing agricultural knowledge and helping other women build more secure and sustainable futures.

Through the Women and Land program, women are not only cultivating crops…they are cultivating opportunity, independence, and long-term resilience.
