Patience & Milcah
Starting with Opportunity
Patience and Milcah were 14 years old and in their first year of high school when they joined our Girls Growing Together program in 2019.
In Malawi, only 15% of girls finish high school, and Patience and Milcah never imagined they would be among them.
Through Girls Growing Together, they received mentorship, scholarships for school fees, school supplies including solar lamps so they could study at night without electricity, menstrual hygiene supplies so they didn’t miss school each month, computer classes, and after-school tutoring in English and mathematics.
Building Skills and Businesses
Last year, Patience and Milcah passed their final exams and graduated high school, a dream come true.
But what came next?
They entered our Vocational Training Program, where they received tailoring training, support to purchase their first sewing machines and open their own tailoring shops.
They quickly became two of the most popular tailors in town, known for their fabulous designs and high quality products.
Inspiring the Next Generation
With the income she earned from tailoring, Patience saved for college and is now studying in nursing school.
Milcah caught the attention of a well-known Malawian fashion designer and is now attending fashion shows and receiving mentorship in the fashion industry.
Inspired by their success, we are building our first Girls in Business Vocational Training Center, where hundreds more girls will learn income-generating skills.
Patience, Milcah, and other graduates will help train the next generation of girls to become tailors, bakers, jewelry makers, tech innovators, and more.
"I opened my own tailoring shop and now I am independent and able to train others. I want to uplift other girls by teaching them to be self-reliant. My dream is to open a training center."
